DDG Updates

DDG version ice: DDG version ice preview.DDG version ice: DDG version ice preview.I know I haven't been updating DDG that much lately and its just nagging at me that the engine's not as optimized as I had previously thought. I've been thinking where I want DDG to head towards in the near future. I don't think there's a lack of interest but rather a lack of time. As you know, I've been a professional web developer for nearly the past year now and when you're working fulltime developing people's websites, you tend to get sick of it and thus I haven't been coding DDG.

If the board didn't get hacked, I wouldn't have got my ass to patch up some of the code. The new board's development rolled back a notch after I managed to patch the hole where the hacker got through. Yeah, now the new board isn't so urgently needed. On the other hand, I've started working on DDG again. Some of the core problems was actually the database design. For example, the graphics table that holds the designs details. It is not normalized and is quite slow to run queries on the table. Same for the membership table that's holding over 20000 records currently. Dreamhost had already closed the membership tables twice after the queries ran so slow that it bogged down the entire MySQL server. Needless to say, I'm not too impressed with that. I immediately used a cron job to run those two queries and wrote the result into a text file, that solved the problem with the database load.

So, this time, I needed to improve the database design and that's quite a pain because the database structure is the very base. Not only would I have to almost re-code all the graphics and membership scripts, I have to re-code the admin scripts as well. Poor DDG, curently the new admin panel is barely half-complete.

I have too many things shoved on my backburner. The new DDG Admin Panel, DDG core engine itself, DDG Board, and integration of those two. I have half a heart to want to extend the board directly from DDG's core engine itself. That would definitely solved the integration problem, however the board has been hosted by Obi and I don't know how she'll like it if I integrate the board completely into DDG.

That looks familiar...

... did I see it die and go to heaven? No, kidding. (Yes, that made totally no sense.) But it does look familiar. Wasn't there a DDG layout previously that looked like that? I remember seeing that little bird on that specific color. *shrugs* It still looks great. =) Good luck on all that work you still have left on DDG.

DDG Updates

Wow! You know, I was thinking about that, I want so much to be a webdesigner, but I dont qwant to take it as a job, then get sick of it. How are you supposed to keep your love for webdesign when it changes from a hobby to a job?

Anyway, good luck with everything! I know you can do it!

Ah, maybe, I can't remember

Ah, maybe, I can't remember now. The bird's a bit silly actually, it was a random vector art I drew and I really suck at vectors.

Ryan: Quite true. When I first went into this line, it was because I enjoyed doing it, so now I got sick of it. Isn't that a paradox. lol

ooo

Yah i already saw that... And im very happy with it, i think it looks great. What I would like to see more of? More open-sourcing? I unno how to explain it much, but a kind of web-design wiki>? maybe in the future.

Tell me about the idea you have, perhaps I can work something out. :)

I know what you are talking

I know what you are talking about Mag. I'm also a web developer like you and been running some dbase driven websites. I'm also doing some recoding for my websites but if there will be a lot of effect to the dbase and its structure, it is a big pain in the ass in coding. IT IS TIRING to code, and even my work as a company web developer is also affected.

I lost my drive in coding, but hopefully to gain it back.

Aww, Lily. Yeah I feel your pain. I know that looking at new web technologies spurs me on, hopefully it'll do it for you as well.

It is really fun to learn...it is, but then because web is so big, and I'm just in a beginner stage of my IT career, I'm totally confuse what to study first. I took a big jump in my IT career and right now, I felt that I was left behind. I have so many things to learn and because of the stack of knowledge that I want to learn..I got confuse

I don't know how I feel... whoa wait.. why am I ranting here? hehehe...sorry about that.

what I mean is that I took a big jump in a sense...everything went fast and I realized that I was so left behind. I regret many things

its' alright Lilygrace. I understand where you're coming from. To tell the truth, web technologies evolve so fast, I can barely catchup. I just learn enough to do what I want and what my job demands. Researching is an ongoing task. =)
